The British punk explosion - as seen through the eyes of its most famous and brashest band - will be chronicled in Pistol, the forthcoming FX miniseries. Watch the first trailer for the series, which drops on Hulu May 31.

Adapted from Pistols guitarist Steve Jones' memoir, the six-part production traces the sociopolitical and economic factors that caused Jones, singer Johnny Rotten, drummer Paul Cook and bassist Glen Matlock (later replaced by self-destructive iconoclast Sid Vicious) to form England's most notorious rock band. The show dramatizes their meteoric rise and terrifying destruction over three short years, in which they laid the groundwork for a new, alternative rock and roll sound.

The series, directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire, Yesterday), is not without its share of controversy. Rotten - now known by his birth name John Lydon - blasted the production as "the most disrespectful shit I've ever had to endure" and attempted to block the use of original recordings from being used in the show. Fans will be able to judge for themselves soon enough.
