The final votes have been tallied, and we now know the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2020. The Doobie Brothers, Nine Inch Nails, T. Rex, Whitney Houston, Notorious B.I.G., and Depeche Mode all the made the cut.
“Each of those bands has helped shape the form that rock & roll has taken over the years,” Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers told Rolling Stone. “That’s what I like to see the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame do: pick those bands that have sculpted what we see rock & roll as today.”
“I’m pretty freaked out. I’m quite in shock," said Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. "When I look back at how Nine Inch Nails are received, it always seems like we fall between the cracks. I don’t know if it’s a defense mechanism, but I just assumed we’d stay in that category, so I’m pleasantly surprised to see us acknowledged. It feels pretty good … I’m allowing myself, for a limited period of time, to feel good about this.”
“We’re incredibly honoured to be included as one of this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, and to stand alongside the other incredible acts in the Rock Hall and those joining this year,” Depeche Mode said in a press statement. “A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us and our music over the years, who have made this possible.”
The artists up for induction this year but didn't receive enough votes to get in: Motörhead, Pat Benatar, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Soundgarden, Todd Rundgren, Dave Matthews Band, Kraftwerk, MC5, and Rufus featuring Chaka Khan.
