Van Morrison "Tupelo Honey" Spotlight Track: “Wild Night”

Tupelo Honey album cover detail

Having decamped to northern California with an almost entirely new band, Van Morrison relied on older material when it came time to record his fifth studio album. The end result was Tupelo Honey, a nine-track collection released October 1971 that peaked at No. 27 on the Billboard album chart, his highest chart position at the time. Front-loaded with the Top 30 hit, “Wild Night,” the album remains a favorite among fans, even if Morrison is far less than fond of the effort: "I wasn't very happy with Tupelo Honey," Morrison admitted in the book Van Morrison: Into the Music. "It consisted of songs that were left over from before and that they'd finally gotten around to using. It wasn't really fresh. It was a whole bunch of songs that had been hanging around for awhile. I was really trying to make a country and western album."
