Rock star Rod Stewart and his oldest son, Sean, have been ordered to court with misdemeanor battery charges after an alleged altercation at a Palm Beach, Florida resort.

According to Peoplethe Stewarts became "agitated" after being denied entry to a private event held in the "children's area" of the resort on New Year's Eve.

Things quickly escalated, with the police report noting that security guard Jessie Dixon "put his hand on the younger Stewart's chest," while telling him to "back up." In return, Sean allegedly got "nose to nose" with Dixon and "shoved [him] backwards," which Rod followed up by "punching Dixon in his left rib cage area."

The report also stated that Rod then apologized for his actions.

An anonymous source told People, "It was a brief misunderstanding and neither Rod nor Sean were detained. Apologies were exchanged and there were no injuries."

Both Rod and Sean Stewart now face simple battery charges and have since been issued notices to appear in court on Feb. 5.
