The Grateful Dead have announced a new podcast The Good Ol' Grateful Deadcast, a weekly series that will examine the storied music and mythology of the Grateful Dead universe.
Accessible on all podcast platforms, the podcast is hosted by Rich Mahan and rock journalist Jesse Jarnow. Each episode of the first season is dedicated to unveiling the origins of the band's Workingman's Dead. All eight episodes highlights the story behind each song on the 1970 LP, with the first episode on "Uncle John's Band" premiering today (July 9).
“Many of the unsolved mysteries of the Dead world will also be explained, including: which obscure Macedonian folk song Jerry Garcia borrowed the ‘Uncle John’s Band’ melody from; dating the exact writing of ‘Dire Wolf’; and locating the secret trail between Garcia and Janis Joplin’s houses,” the band shared in a statement.
With a tagline of "For The Committed and The Curious," the series also features a slew of guests from the Dead family, including Jerry Garcia's daughter, Trixie, Grateful Dead legacy manager and archivist David Lemieux, NBA Champion and famous Dead Head Bill "Grateful Red" Walton, and more. Future episodes will also include rare, archival interviews of those who contributed to the band during their early years, including Stephen Barncard, Steve Brown, Brian Godchaux, and Ron and Susan Wickersham and others.
