Elton John's ex-wife Renate Blauel is seeking a $3.8 million dollar payout over claims that his 2019 autobiography, Me, broke the terms of their divorce agreement.
According to legal documents filed at London's high court this week, John allegedly agreed to exclude certain passages about their relationship before the book's publication, but Blauel claims they triggered existing mental health problems, reports The Independent.
John married Blauel, a sound engineer, on Valentine's Day, 1984 in Australia, but divorced by 1988, around the same time the singer announced that he was gay.
In his autobiography, he reflected on the emotional turmoil of their split, describing, "I’d broken the heart of someone I loved and who loved me unconditionally, someone I couldn’t fault in any way. Despite all the pain, there was no acrimony involved at all."
He also admitted in Me he has limited contact with Blauel following their divorce, but that he had reached out to her to meet his children because he "wanted her to be part of our lives and us part of hers, in some way."
"But she didn't want to," he continued. "And I didn't push the issue. I have to respect how she feels."
John has yet to comment on the lawsuit.
